Hyderabad: The Ukraine war has already brought out a few tales of human-animal bonding, with one Indian student refusing to leave the country without his pet dog, while another student managed to escape the country with her Siberian Husky. The story of Nisha Rani from Shamshabad is somewhere in between. Her pet dog is out of Ukraine, but not with her.
A student of Vinnytsia National Pirogov Medical University, Ukraine, Nisha managed to reach home safely and is now making efforts to get Leo, her English Cocker Spaniel, also to Hyderabad.
“Right now, my university teacher is taking Leo to Moldova from Ukraine. So he is out of the war zone. But she has two children to take care of. I want help from someone who can bring Leo to India from Moldova,” said Nisha, who reached home on Monday.
Following an appeal from People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), the union government on Tuesday has issued a memorandum giving one-time relaxation for bringing back pet dogs and cats along with Indian nationals stranded in Ukraine, and Nisha hopes this will be of some use, if there is someone willing to help her and Leo reunite.
As the war broke out, Nisha decided to return on February 25 and booked the flight ticket. However, her flight was cancelled following bombing in the airport.
“We were the first ones to hire a bus and reach the border. Ukrainian army personnel abused us and in fact fired shots in the air to disperse the crowd at the border. We finally manage to reach Bucharest in Hungary after waiting at the border for two days and were flown back on a special flight,” she said.
