Mahabubabad: Former Minister Satyavathi Rathod has demanded that the Congress government extend assistance to the families of farmers who died while they were on their way to get urea in the district.
According to the family members, the farmers of Govindapuram in Gudur mandal died in a road accident while they were travelling on a motorbike to go to a PACS for urea on Sunday. A farmer, Banoth Lalya, died on the spot, while the seriously injured farmer Veeranna died while being treated in hospital in Khammam.
Angry relatives, family members and farmers staged a protest at Mahabubabad Government District Hospital, demanding justice to the families of the deceased farmers. On learning about the deaths, Satyavathi Rathod visited their families and joined the protest.
Speaking on the occasion, she expressed grief over the deaths of the farmers. The incident reflects the sad state of affairs prevailing in Telangana in supplying urea, but the State and Central government remain inactive in addressing the crisis.
Meanwhile Satyavathi Rathod had the first-hand experience of the urea crisis which put farmers to severe hardships all over Telangana. She visited Gundrathimadugu Rythu Vedika on Sunday to get bags of urea for her five-and-a-half acres of land at Pedda Thanda in the district.
She waited in a queue for long hours along with farmers. When her turn came, the officials gave her only one bag of urea.
Expressing displeasure, the former BRS minister questioned the officials how one bag of urea could suffice for five-and-a-half acres of land and urged the government to ensure adequate supply of urea to all the farmers.
