Hyderabad: For not complying with anti-ragging regulations, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has served show cause notices on seven universities, including Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) – Hyderabad, National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER), Hyderabad, in the State.
Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies, Basar, Aurora Higher Education and Research Academy, Malla Reddy Vishwavidyapeeth, MNR University, and Telugu University have also been served show cause notices for not filing anti-ragging compliance for 2024.
Overall, 89 universities, including IIM Rohtak, IIM Bangalore, IIM Tiruchirappalli, Indira Gandhi National Open University, National Institute of Design and IIT Mumbai were issued show cause notices.
All the institutions have been asked to comply with anti-ragging regulations besides taking online undertakings from students within 30 days. The institutions have also been asked to provide a comprehensive report on measures adopted to prevent ragging in their respective campuses.
The UGC warned the institutions of de-recognition or withdrawal of affiliation if they fail to comply with UGC Regulations on Ragging, 2009. It also warned of an action, including withdrawal of grants and funding, and public disclosure of non-compliance of the norms.
As per the regulations, it is mandatory for all higher educational institutions to comply with anti-ragging norms. Failure to comply not only violates the UGC guidelines but also compromises student safety, particularly in light of increasing concerns about ragging-related distress and campus hostility, the UGC said.
