Underground dustbins turn useless in Karimnagar
As part of the Karimnagar Smart City program, the Municipal Corporation of Karimnagar set up underground dustbins two years ago to keep the roads clean and prevent garbage from being scattered. A total of 14 dustbins were planned for installation across six locations, with an investment of Rs. 1 crore. However, dustbins were only installed at three of these locations. The condition of the dustbins has deteriorated, and the vehicle intended for garbage collection has remained unused.

Karimnagar: Underground dustbins that were established in different parts of Karimnagar town have turned useless.
To ensure roads are clean and to avoid garbage lying strewn around, the Municipal Corporation of Karimnagar had established the underground dustbins as part of the Karimnagar Smart City programme two years ago. Fourteen dustbins were established in six places spending Rs.1 crore. Out of six, dustbins were installed only in three places. The condition of the dustbins has turned worse with a vehicle purchased to remove the garbage too not been used.

Though there are underground dustbins in a few places, the people are still dumping garbage on the roads as the dustbins are not being cleared regularly. Lack of awareness is also one of the reasons for dumping garbage on roads. With foul smell spreading in the area, it is very difficult to pass through the area behind the bus stand where garbage is being dumped on the road. Though there are two underground dustbins in the area, people are dumping garbage on the road. As two dustbins have been filled completely, municipal authorities on Monday deployed two staffers to ensure that people do not dump garbage on the road.

On the other hand, dumper bins in many areas are also in a dilapidated condition. With the bins corroding, garbage is lying on the road.
Municipal sources said after setting up underground dustbins, authorities neglected the dumper bins and appear least bothered about repair works. Officials are making efforts to make the underground bins useful, it is learned.
