Hyderabad: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) sought a report from Hyderabad Police Commissioner on a complaint filed by the University of Hyderabad (UoH) students, alleging they were recently subjected to distressing conduct by the police on the varsity land dispute.
Two students approached the NHRC, alleging that students were subjected to distressing conduct by the police when they stood for their rights regarding land dispute concerning rightful ownership and use of land associated with the university.
As per the proceeding, students alleged they were subjected to intimidation, excessive force, wrongful detainment without prior notice or justification, violating legal norms. They also alleged that students were not allowed to contact their families or legal counsel.
“Instances of physical intimidation and coercion were reported, creating an environment of fear and hostility. Such actions are a direct violation of fundamental rights, including the right to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression,” it said.
Sharing a copy of the complaint, the NHRC called for an action taken report from the Hyderabad Police Commissioner within four weeks and put up the case after four weeks.
