Warangal/Khammam: Farmers here are fuming with anger over the shortage of urea that has been making them wait in long queues at PACS offices and stage protests against the Congress government’s failure to ensure an adequate supply of urea.
Farmers have burnt photo copies of pattadar passbooks and Aadhaar cards at Narsimhulapet PACS in Mahabubabad district as a mark of protest against society officials who failed to issue urea tokens even after they waited for long hours.
In Kothagudem, during Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s visit, farmers staged a dharna for urea at the Ganugapadu Society office in Chandrugonda mandal demanding supply of urea in adequate quantities. At Julurupadu in Kothagudem, farmers locked the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Society staff in the office.
They complained that each farmer was given only one bag of urea while at least three bags should have been provided.
The local police, after learning about the matter, came to the office and opened the shutter. The cooperative society officials said that they had placed an order for 40 tons of urea but only ten tons of urea had been received. Farmers would be given the rest as soon as stocks arrived.
Farmers in large numbers staged ‘Vanta Vaarpu’ on the national highway at Khanapuram of Warangal district. Vehicles were stranded for several kilometres due to the protest. Incidents of farmers fainting in the queue line took place at several places.
Farmers jumped over the PACS gate and ran inside after receiving information that urea stock had arrived at the Maripeda PACS in Mahabubabad. Former MLA Gandra Venkataramana Reddy staged a protest along with farmers at Mandaripet on the Parakal-Bhupalpally main road.
Demanding adequate supply of urea, farmers staged rasta-roko at Narsampet in Warangal. They complained that society staff were charging an additional Rs. 70 per bag.
Similar protests were seen at several places at Bhupalpally, Dornakal and Maripeda. Hundreds of farmers standing in queues at several PACS offices across Khammam staged protests as officials informed them that only 110 bags of urea would be distributed on Wednesday.
