Hyderabad: Commemorating 50 years of 1971 Indo-Pakistan war, the Victory Flame of Swarnim Vijay Varsh celebrations reached the Navy House-Bolarum, Secunderabad, on Saturday. The Indian Navy played a stellar role on both the western and eastern sea fronts during the war that resulted in the birth of a new nation — Bangladesh.
As part of the Swarnim Vijay Varsh, victory flames were lit on December 16, 2020 and were carried by the Armed Forces across the country in four cardinal directions. The flame for the South cardinal travelled to Port Blair, Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry, Vijayawada and Nalgonda on the naval leg. It was formally received by Rear Admiral V Raja Sekhar, Station Commander (Navy).
Floral wreaths were laid in front of the Victory Flame by the Station Commander, 1971 war veterans officers, sailors and Vardhini, wife of late war veteran Panduranga Rao, Honorary Sub Lieutenant. Over 20 war veterans from the Station were subsequently felicitated.
Vice Admiral (Retd) KASZ Raju, who was CO of INS Brahmaputra during the operation in Eastern seaboard, was also present during the event. He was decorated with Nao Sena (Gallantry) for his contributions during the war. Indian Navy band from Eastern Naval Command belted out awe-inspiring patriotic numbers during the celebrations.
Post completion of events in Hyderabad, the Victory Flame will now move to Nagpur. Telangana Police provided a Green Corridor during movement of the Victory Flame to different locations within Hyderabad.
