Nirmal: The district registered a slight increase in crimes in the year 2021 when compared to that of the previous year. Superintendent of Police Ch Praveen Kumar disclosed this while briefing the annual crime rate of the district to pressmen here on Thursday. Praveen Kumar said that the district recorded 2,703 various crimes this year as against 2,521 cases reported in 2020, showing a rise by 7.21 per cent. Significantly, it saw a spurt in convictions.
It registered 705 convictions when compared to 248 convictions achieved in 2020, indicating a rise by 62 percent even as courts did not fully function due to Covid-19 induced lockdown. In a disturbing trend, the district saw a substantial increase in crimes against women this year. It registered 257 various offences in 2021 as against women as against 191 crimes reported in 2020. In particular, harassment by husbands has gone up.
As many as 79 cases of domestic violence were recorded in 2021 when compared to 42 in the corresponding period. Similarly, road accidents, one of the major menaces, have shot up this year. The district registered 275 road mishaps in 2021 when compared to 218 that occurred in 2020, indicating a rise by 26 per cent.
As many as 135 persons were killed, while 340 persons sustained injuries in the accidents as against 114 fatalities, showing an increase by 18 per cent. The district had 3,691 drunk and drive cases reported in 2021 and 1,295 cases in 2020, posting a rise by 185 percent. However, it saw a decline in property offences. It registered 87 cases in this year as against 100 registered in 2020, reflecting a drop by 13 percent. The district witnessed a rise in cheating, traffic violations, missing and gambling cases.
