Warangal: Despite the measures taken by the police, the overall crime rate including crime against the women have gone up under the Warangal police commissionerate limits in 2021 comparing to the previous year. While the overall crime rate was up by 3.85 per cent with a total of 11,047 cases reported under the commissionerate limits which include Hanamkonda (Warangal Urban), Warangal (Warangal Rural) and Jangaon districts, cases of harassment of women shot up by 40.25 per cent causing much worry among women. The number of the cases of women harassment reported in 297 in 2020, the number has gone to 497 in 2021. Pathetically, the overall conviction rate is 53.22 per cent. “During this year, a total of 5,456 cases were disposed by the courts, out of which 2904 cases ended in conviction. Meanwhile, five people have been sentenced to life imprisonment in seven cases,” Warangal Police Commissioner Dr Tarun Joshi said. On the other hand, the police are yet to trace nine girls and 39 women who went missing in this year.
Moreover, the youth are getting addicted to consumption of ganja (cannabis) and other narcotic drugs in the city. While 31 case were booked and 55 peddlers including the ‘victims’ arrested in 2020 and in connection with the ganja cases with the seizure of Rs 37.18 lakh worth ganja, the police have arrested 118 persons in 35 cases besides seizure of Rs 89.28 lakh worth dry ganja (cannabis) in 2021.
On other hand, the police have arrested 249 persons for selling or consumption of the narcotic drugs by registering 98 cases this year. They have seized a whopping Rs 1.02 crore worth drugs. The narcotic drug cases registered in 2020 were 39, while 78 people were arrested in the cases. The rapid urbanisation is said to be one of reasons for the growing crime.
