Warangal: Crops, mainly chilli and maize, were damaged by the unseasonal rains coupled with hailstorm in erstwhile Warangal district on Tuesday, and the rains continue to lash several parts of the combined district on Wednesday too.
Besides, several villages are without electricity since last night as power lines in more than 100 villages in Warangal and Mulugu districts were damaged in the strong winds. Authorities of NPDCL swung into action and have begun replacing damaged power lines wherever the rain had subsided to restore power.
With the hailstorm flattening the maize crops in hundreds of acres, farmers are an upset lot and have appealed to the government to conduct a survey to assess crops loss.
Meanwhile, Narsampet MLA Peddi Sudharshan Reddy along with the revenue officials inspected the damaged crops in his constituency and consoled the farmers. He also promised that he would take up the issue of crop loss to the notice of Agriculture Minister S Niranjan Reddy and ensure that compensation is paid to the farmers. “As per the directions of District Collector, Warangal, the officials of the agriculture, horticulture and revenue will inspect the damaged crops to prepare the estimations of crop loss once the rain subsides,” Sudharshan Reddy added.
Houses and huts were also damaged in the rains.
