Warangal Rural: Residents of Mariyapuram, a tiny village located just 11 km from Warangal railway station in Geesugonda mandal of the district, have cashed in on the State government’s initiative to vaccinate high-risk groups in the State on priority as part of its efforts to check the spread of Covid.
The village has a total population of 760, and the majority of them are aged above 45 years. People in this group were vaccinated at Geesugonda Primary Health Centre (PHC) and residents above 60 were given two doses of vaccination. However, villagers aged above 18 and below 45 also managed to get the vaccine under the ‘potential spreader’ category during a drive conducted by the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation (GWMC) though the village does not come under the jurisdiction of the GWMC.
“There are a total of 413 people aged between 18 and 45 years. We, however, managed to get them identified as ‘super spreaders’ by the GWMC and 373 of them were vaccinated at the Vishnupriya Gardens in Hanamkonda under GWMC limits. The remaining people including pregnant women, lactating mothers and others with some health issues,” Allam Bali Reddy, sarpanch, Mariyampurm, told Telangana Today. Some of them got vaccines in private hospitals too, Bal Reddy added.
Sources said many people, who do not come under the high risk category, are getting vaccinated under this category as the GWMC staff was ‘helping’ them. “Since there is no data available with the GWMC about all the LPG delivery men, fair price shop dealers, petrol pump workers, auto and cab drivers, vendors in Rythu bazaars, fruit, vegetable and flower markets, kirana shops, liquor shops, and meat markets, some people from well-off families are also getting the vaccine under this special drive,” Founder President of Society for Public Welfare and Initiative (SPWI) Dr Suresh Devath said.
Meanwhile, the GWMC identified 93,035 people under the high-risk category. A total of 1,15,307 were vaccinated under the GWMC limits till June 16.
