What Are Gallbladder Stones? A Complete Overview
whatsapp facebook twitter telegram

It began with a nondescript pain in my mother’s right side. Initially, she thought nothing of it and assumed it was acidity or something she had eaten. But over the next few weeks, the ache became more acute, often travelling to her back, and she found herself wincing and holding her side. That night, I vividly recollect when she woke up in pain and couldn’t find a comfortable position for herself. But this fear in her eyes — it was new. Gastro, if you will, though it wasn’t just gastro, something was up.

The following morning, we hurried to the doctor and, after a few tests, received a term that we had never really brought much thought to: gallbladder stones. As it turned out, those little stones were formed in her gallbladder. For smaller stones, the doctor had prescribed ursocol 300, the medicine that dissolves cholesterol gall stones, which means always lifestyle modification. And so began our intensive investigation into this extremely common condition that is so easily overlooked.

What You Need To Know About Stones In A Gallbladder

The gallbladder is a small organ that is underneath the liver and is an important part of the digestive process. It stores and secretes bile. When everything is in balance, bile will do the job and break down the fat, but in some cases, deposits harden—gallbladder stones form.

Some people will live their entire lives without any signs or symptoms, while others are not so fortunate; they experience intense pain, nausea, and digestive irregularities. These stones can range in size from fine grains to large formations. My mom was more of the latter.

Gallbladder Stones and Their Classifications

  1. Cholesterol Stones

This is the most common type of stone, mostly made of undissolved cholesterol. These appear waxy yellow and develop when the bile has excess cholesterol and low bile salts.

  1. Pigment Stones

The dark-coloured stones are made from bilirubin and typically form in patients with liver-related disease, infections, or blood disorders such as sickle cell anaemia.

  1. Mixed Stones

They are composed of cholesterol, calcium salts and other biliary constituents, and therefore, are less soluble.

Symptoms of Gallstone

Gallbladder stones usually do not show up until it is already there. A few, like my mom, live symptom-free for years at a time before an attack comes along. Some of the indications to look out for are the following:

  • Severe biliary colic pain
  • Back or shoulder radiating pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Indigestion and bloating
  • Jaundice

Causes and Risk Factors

This was very strange to us; why did my mother have gallbladder stones? The doctor enumerated contributing factors, including:

  • Excess cholesterol in bile: Common in individuals with high-fat diets.
  • Poor bile flow: This may be due to rapid loss of weight, fasting or pregnancy.
  • Genetics: Similar to genetics, and if there is a history within your family then the risk is also increased.
  • Obesity and diabetes Both promote bile disturbance.
  • Hormonal change: High risk during pregnancy and birth control pills

Treatment Options

  1. Medications

For older stones, doctors occasionally prescribe bile acid drugs, such as Ursocol 300 to dissolve the stone slowly. This is cast-iron, as far as my mother was concerned, but it was only temporary.

  1. Lifestyle Adjustments

We switched to fibre-rich meals and excluded fried meals, simply because speedy weight reduction would just exacerbate stone formation.

  1. Surgery (Cholecystectomy)

If the stones are larger or the problem is extra horrifying, then the gallbladder removal surgical procedure is usually the best answer. My mother had laparoscopic surgery that eventually cured her pain, although she was initially resistant to surgery.

Prevention of Gallstones

Watching my mom go through all of that made me pay more attention to what I was doing. Here is what I discovered on how to prevent gallbladder stones:

  • Consume a healthy diet with a lot of fibre and healthy fats
  • Drink plenty of water to keep bile moving
  • Do not follow a crash diet
  • Exercise regularly to make the digestive system better.

Wrapping Up

If one is aware of the symptoms and takes quick action, it is difficult to get any severe condition. From medications such as Ursocol 300 to small lifestyle modifications, gallbladder well-being is something we all have the power to manage. Untreated gallbladder stones may cause infections and serious digestive problems, so the condition must be treated as soon as possible.

If you or your loved ones have been suffering from similar symptoms, do not take your symptoms lightly. Seek medical advice before it is too late.
