Khammam: Several streams overflowed, disrupting traffic, while low-lying areas and standing crops across large tracts were inundated following widespread rains in erstwhile Khammam district over the past 24 hours.
In Karepalli mandal, the Buggavagu stream overflowed onto the road between Perupalli and Madaram, halting traffic. As floodwaters entered double-bedroom houses on the outskirts of Perupalli village, Karepalli SI Gopi and revenue officials shifted residents to relief centres in tractors. Police were deployed at Kalvavoddu as the Munneru river received heavy inflows. Khammam urban CI Bhanu Prakash set up barricades after the Dhamsalapuram-Bonakal road was submerged. Traffic was also halted between Paladugu and Vallapuram villages as another stream overflowed.
At Kothagudem district headquarters, traffic on the Kothagudem-Khammam road came to a standstill for several hours due to waterlogging in the Vidya Nagar area. Similar situations were reported in Paloncha, Dammapet, Cherla and other areas.
Officials announced that three gates of the Kinnerasani dam would be lifted at 9 pm on Monday to discharge excess water and advised people in the catchment area to remain vigilant. Dammapet recorded 12 cm of rainfall, Chunchupally 11.4 cm, and Paloncha, Aswaraopet and Laxmidevipally mandals 10 cm each.
