Hyderabad: Prohibition and Excise Minister V Srinivas Goud on Sunday said the department would strengthen the intelligence network to nab drug peddlers and pointed out that a task force has already been constituted.
Speaking after felicitating the Excise Department officials for busting a racket on the city suburbs and seizing drugs worth Rs 2 crore, the Minister said efforts were on to make Telangana free from drugs in a month.
“We will focus mainly on intelligence network during the next 30 days to gather information about the peddlers,” he said, adding that necessary instructions were already issued in this regard.
Following instructions from Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao to increase surveillance on the State borders to restrict peddlers from getting marijuana from Andhra Odisha Border (AOB), the department has not only stepped up surveillance but also strengthened intelligence network to gather information about the peddlers.
Based on intelligence inputs only, the department has busted a drug racket in Kukatpally and seized 5 kg of Mephedrone drug worth Rs 2 crore, the Minister said.
He said instructions were given to prepare a separate action plan to contain the drug menace in the State by taking necessary action against buyers and sellers.
The Minister said rewards would be given to the officers who excel in their duty. Rewards would also be given to the people who furnish information about the peddlers, he said, assuring that the names of the informants would not be disclosed.
On Friday, the Minister convened a meeting with the excise officials from all the districts to discuss the action plan to be prepared to control the drug menace.
