Hyderabad: Malayalam actor Unni Mukundan, who had earlier shared his version of events on social media, finally appeared in front of the media today to directly address the assault allegations made against him by Vipin Kumar. The press meet, held today, saw the actor strongly deny all claims and give a detailed account of what really happened.
“He has handled PR for some of my films but was never my manager,” Unni clarified at the very start. “Yes, I met him, and I’ll explain why.”
Unni said the issue began two weeks ago when he got a call from an unknown woman. She made serious allegations involving several people, including Vipin and someone known to Unni. Concerned by the gravity of the information, Unni said he contacted the people involved and even submitted the details to senior police officers.
“Vipin dismissed the matter, saying the call was from an unknown number and shouldn’t be taken seriously,” Unni said.
The situation worsened when a leading actress from the Malayalam film industry called Unni, upset that he had allegedly spoken badly about her—something Unni strongly denied.
“I would never say such things. Instead of confronting Vipin directly, I told a director friend. He spoke to Vipin, who later said he regretted it and wanted to apologise to me in person,” Unni explained.
Unni admitted that he did meet Vipin, and that a viral video showing him throwing his glasses during the meeting was real.
“Yes, I was emotional. I threw his glasses. But I did not hit or hurt him. I told him that we could no longer work together,” he said.
A mutual friend who was present during the meeting witnessed the entire exchange. “Vipin cried and apologised. My friend, who didn’t know the full background, saw everything,” Unni added.
He also revealed that Vipin had previously faced complaints from two actresses for misbehaviour.
“You can verify this with FEFKA or AMMA.
This is not the first time complaints have been raised against him,” the actor said.
Unni also denied the rumour that the clash happened because Vipin praised actor Tovino Thomas’ recent film Narivetta.
“That is a baseless PR stunt. I’ve never said anything against Tovino or his film. There is no need to drag him into this,” he clarified.
Unni explained that the meeting with Vipin was meant only for a conversation. “Bad things happened from his side. I just wanted to talk. I got emotional,” he said.
He confirmed that he would attend the discussion called by the cinema association to resolve the issue. “If there is any proof that I assaulted him, I will stop acting in films,” Unni stated firmly.
He ended the press meet by saying, “Many people believe there is someone behind Vipin’s actions. I don’t want to name anyone. But I’m afraid false cases may be filed against me.”
Legal update: Court closes bail plea to Unni Mukundan
On the same day as the press meet, the Ernakulam Principal and Sessions Court disposed of Unni Mukundan’s anticipatory bail plea. Vipin had filed a police complaint claiming the actor slapped and threatened him.
The prosecution informed the court that all the charges—voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation, and obscene acts—are bailable. They also presented the case diary. After reviewing the submissions, the court closed the bail plea.
Unni’s lawyer argued that the allegations are false, created to defame the actor and mentally disturb him. They also suggested the possibility of a planned attempt to damage his reputation.
In the complaint, Vipin had said Unni called him to the parking area of the DLF apartment in Kakkanad and verbally abused and hit him. He also claimed that Unni was under emotional stress and facing rejection despite the success of Marco.
