Hyderabad: A 34-year-old woman advocate was allegedly murdered by her own brother during a dispute over family property in Moinabad in Rangareddy district on Wednesday.
The victim, identified as Swapna, was a practicing lawyer at the Chevella Court.
According to preliminary police investigations, the incident took place at Kethireddypally village under Moinabad police station limits. Swapna had gone to a farmland where a panchayat was being held to resolve a long-standing property dispute within the family.
As per information available, the discussion escalated into a heated argument, during which Swapna’s brother allegedly attacked her in a fit of rage with a knife on the neck. She suffered severe injuries and collapsed on the spot. Locals rushed her to a nearby private hospital, where the doctors declared her dead.
Following the incident, the suspect fled the spot. Police teams have launched a manhunt and special teams have been formed to trace and arrest him.
A murder case has been registered, and further investigation is on to establish the sequence of events and recover evidence.
Meanwhile, the brutal killing triggered widespread outrage among advocates across the district. Enraged lawyers boycotted court proceedings at Chevella and other nearby courts as a mark of protest.
Large numbers of advocates also gathered at the Moinabad police station, demanding swift arrest of the accused and strict punishment.
As part of the protest, lawyers also blocked the Hyderabad–Bijapur national highway for several hours, leading to traffic disruptions. Protesters raised slogans condemning the violence and sought enhanced security for advocates, particularly women lawyers.
Senior police officials reached the protest site and assured the legal community that the accused would be arrested at the earliest and justice would be delivered. After assurances from the authorities, the protest was partially withdrawn.
