Hyderabad: Directing State level senior and district level agricultural officials to be prepared to support over 87 lakh acres of Yasangi crop this year, Agriculture Minister Singireddy Niranjan Reddy said that plenty of rain, improved irrigation facilities and government’s farmer-centric programmes had led to increase in cultivation acreage. He also pointed out that several families have returned to their native villages because of Covid-19 and started cultivation of barren lands adding to last year’s cultivation in a total of 39.12 lakh acres.
Speaking via video conference from his residence here on Monday, the Minister said that farmers had willingly adapted the regulated cropping pattern suggested by the government during Vaanakalam. “We thought of allowing the farmers to take up maize this Yasangi. But the prevailing international market for maize is not supportive for Telangana farmers because of existing stocks in the worldwide market,” he said. He directed the Village Officers (VO) and Village Extension Officers (VEO) to explain the reasons for discouraging maize to farmers.

He wanted the officers to prepare a detailed report about the demand, and available minimum support price for moong, black gram, jowar, sunflower, chickpea, mustard and sesame crops and the areas where the crops can be cultivated and the extent. He also directed them to keep sufficient stocks of seeds ready for the Yasangi season. He informed them that the Centre has allocated 10 lakh tons of urea and 8.30 tons of other fertilisers for Telangana for Yasangi season.
While directing the officials about the hassle free distribution of Urea among farmers, Niranjan Reddy said that extra care must be taken in dealing with the centres that have resorted to illegal activities during Vaanakalam. He asked them to speed up construction of `Rytu Vedikas’ and said that they must be ready by dasara. He also appreciated several officers for completing the construction work in time. The Minister said that all the details of crop-booking in the State must be recorded as per the directions. Principal Secretary Agriculture B Janardhan Reddy was also present in the meeting.
