However, the second incident did not spare the passengers with 47 passengers being reported dead, when a Jeju airliner 2216 crashed while bellylanding in Muan airport in South Korea.
Initial reports quoted failure of landing gear as the cause of mishap with the pilots opting for bellylanding ultimately leading the plane to veer off the runway and crashing into a wall. However, later footage emerged to show a possible bird strike moments before the bellylanding.
The KLM Boeing 737-800 (#PHBXM) was operating flight KL1204 from Oslo to Amsterdam on December 28, 2024. Shortly after takeoff the pilots reported a hydraulic failure, halting the climb at 5,000 feet.
The aircraft was diverted to Sandefjord Airport in Torp, where it successfully landed but skidded off the runway onto grass near the taxiway. Thankfully, all 182 people on board, including crew, were uninjured. Emergency services swiftly arrived on the scene to assist passengers.
The Jeju passengers were not so lucky. The plane, as videos showed, landed on its belly and moments later erupted in a huge ball of fire.
With both the ill-fated aircraft being Boeing, airlines world over would have to wait for inquiry reports to see whether other Boeing 737-800s were safe to operate.
And 2024 is sure to leave Boeing extremely worried.
