Hyderabad: With the winter setting in and the mercury dropping significantly, the Nehru Zoological Park authorities made special arrangements to protect the animals.
Compared to the other areas of the city, the temperature at the zoo are usually low considering the vast green cover in the park and its proximity to the Mir Alam Tank and neighbouring areas of thick vegetative pockets of Agriculture College, Himayatsagar and Osmansagar.
The caretakers have arranged room heaters in all night houses of leopard, cheetah, jaguar, tiger, lion apart from other animals such as baboon, chimpanzee etc.
“After studying the requirement, room heaters were arranged at the enclosures and wherever necessary, gunny bags are used to cover the night houses. Wooden planks were also kept on the ground,” said Nehru Zoological Park, Curator, S Rajasekhar.
Authorities also made arrangements for protection of the birds by covering the cages with green cloth and nest boxes placed. The night houses of reptiles are provided with dry leaves, bulbs and small pots to protect them from the chill.
“Caretakers monitor the health condition of the animals and ensure their safety under supervision of the veterinary doctors of the zoo park,” said the curator.
Meanwhile, the footfall at the zoo park which saw slight increase after Covid 19 relaxations were announced few months back, again started declining in the last few days because of Omicron Covid variant cases going up across the globe.
“Since last few days the numbers of visitor have dropped. However, all precautions are being taken to safeguard the animals as well visitors to the zoo park,” an official at the zoo added.
