A new spin to artistic roots

Designer Falguni Shankar’s label offers clothes that are on just the right side of dressy and comfy for WFH days

Hyderabad: Like most fashion graduates looking to find their unique aesthetic around them, NIFT graduate Falguni Shankar found it in her fascination with Indian arts and handicrafts.

During her time at NIFT, she often found herself drawn towards beadwork, silk paintings, tie and dye, and block prints. So, when the time came to start her eponymous label, it made sense that most of her designs reflected her love for the crafts.

“I started with accessories like bags in tie and dye or handpainted with tropical birds. It was later that I decided to introduce elements of art in my clothing line,” says Falguni Shankar. Her designs are mostly casual wear in breezy silhouettes like tunics, maxis, crop tops, skirts featuring handpainted designs by the designer.

Falguni’s newest collection is ideal for the hot weather and has crop tops, ruffle and A-line dresses and skirts that have hand-painted bullfinch, toucon birds, and oriental floral patterns and marine life beadwork adorning them. The colour palette is mostly pastels and is easy on the eye.

“Most of my collections are clothes that are comfortable enough that they can be worn at home, but also have some dressier aspects like embroidery or bead work on them. With people working from home, they want comfy fabrics but which are not lounge wear also,” explains the 29-year-old.

The label, which mostly caters to the 30- to 40-year age group, also offers bandhani saris, blouses, and kaftans. Her drops aren’t defined by season or trends, rather the designer prefers to go with one theme which percolates in all her designs.

Falguni also likes to upcycle material left over from the dresses by using them to make her sling bags. While initially, her patrons discovered her label at the flea markets and exhibitions held around the city, now her clientele finds her through Instagram. “Going digital helped. These days, my clients are from all over India with orders coming in from abroad too,” says Falguni.
