Mancherial: The Forest Department’s Jannaram and Khanapur divisions will jointly host the maiden bird walk in several parts of the Kawal Tiger Reserve (KTR) in order to expose its biodiversity to nature lovers, wildlife photographers and birders on February 12 and 13.
Khanapur Forest Divisional Officer (FDO) U Koteshwar Rao told ‘Telangana Today’ the objective of the event is to help nature lovers, wildlife photographers, birders, researchers and students belonging to Telangana explore the lesser-known wealth of the avian community and biodiversity of the reserve. The event is going to be organised by the divisions for the first time. The reserve is home to 300 bird species and 600 plant species.

A registration fee of Rs 1,500 will be charged per head. Around 20 spots including important habitats of birds and water bodies, located in Jannaram and Khanapur forest divisions, were identified. The Forest Department will provide accommodation, food and an internal transportation facility. Participants will be accommodated under make-shift tents to be erected in the forest.
Interested persons are requested to register their names by dialing 94408 10183 (Jannaram FDO), 89856 41651 (Khanapur FDO), 73375 52140 (Jannaram FRO) and 7337552160 (Indanpalli FRO) on February 10. The participants are advised to report at the office of the Jannaram Forest Divisional Office on February 12 at 10 am. They will be divided into groups which will visit the spots under the guidance of staffers of the department.
Green-winged teal, northern pintail, painted stork, river lapwing, painted storks, and many other bird species were spotted at irrigation tanks of both Jannaram and Khanapur divisions.
Leopards, wolves, wild dogs, spotted deer, wild cats, foxes, etc. inhabit the forests of Kawal Tiger Reserve. Similarly, beautiful streams, scenic ponds and hills can be spotted in the reserve.
Established in 2015, KTR is the 42nd facility in the country. Its core zone spreads in 893 sq km and buffers zone in 1,120 sq km covering forest cover of Adilabad, Nirmal, Mancherial and Kumram Bheem Asifabad districts.
Kaghaznagar forest division conducted the bird walk in December of 2019 and January of 2022, attracting over 100 nature lovers, wildlife photographers, researchers, birders and students belonging to several parts of Telangana and Maharashtra.
