ABVP protests in Hyderabad over alleged plan to close government schools
ABVP activists staged a protest at the School Education Directorate in Hyderabad, opposing an alleged plan to close government schools. They demanded stronger regulation of private school fees, filling of teacher vacancies, improved infrastructure, and implementation of NEP 2020.
Hyderabad: Tension prevailed at the Directorate of School Education here on Tuesday as the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activists staged a protest, demanding the State government immediately withdraw the proposed move to close down 23,000 out of 27,000 government schools across the State.
A large number of students and activists raised slogans against the government, expressing their dissatisfaction over the government’s failure to address issues plaguing schools.
ABVP national executive council member Jeevan said it was unfortunate that instead of strengthening government schools, efforts were being made to shut them down.
The protesters demanded that the government take immediate action against fee exploitation in private and corporate schools, besides a law to control fees. They also called for the strict implementation of the Right to Education Act and wanted the government to immediately fill vacant teaching and non-teaching positions, as well as mandal education officer and district education officer posts.
Apart from demanding basic infrastructure in government schools and construction of permanent buildings for residential schools, the ABVP wanted the government to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
