Indian Pitta or Ponnanki pitta spotted by Lingampalli Krishna in the forests of Kosai in Thalamadugu mandal on Tuesday.  According to ornithologists, the tiny bird breeds in the sub-Himalayan region, northern and central India and migrates to South India during winter

Adilabad: Lingampalli Krishna, a wildlife photographer from the town, spotted a stubby-tailed Indian Pitta or Pitta Brachyura in Kosai forest area in Thalamadugu mandal for the first time in the recent past. The bird is locally known as Ponnaki pitta.

Krishna, who recently took to wildlife photography, captured the shy bird in the wilds of remote Kosai. “I am thrilled to have spotted the tiny beautiful winged wonder in the forests of this region. Local foresters told me that it’s a common bird, but it has not been sighted in recent times,” Krishna told Telangana Today.

According to ornithologists, the tiny bird breeds in the sub-Himalayan region, northern and central India and migrates to South India during winter.  It is a favorite bird species for birdwatchers. “This beautiful creature can be difficult to spot unless one knows how it moves, feeds and where exactly it hangs out,” Kavita, a birder from Hyderabad said.

He also caught on camera various birds including oriental honey buzzard, black winged kite, crested hawk-eagle, black kite, changeable hawk-eagle, white-eye buzzard, shikra- hawk in the forests of Adilabad.

The photographer also donated 500 clay bowls to the general public to be placed in their homes to help quench the thirst of birds in summer and to mark World Sparrows Day observed on March 20th.
