Admissions to higher educational institutions in Telangana set to see three major changes
Three new policies of the State government will come into force in the upcoming academic year, impacting a broad range of higher education programmes, including engineering, pharmacy and management
Hyderabad: Admissions to higher educational institutions in Telangana are set to witness three major changes for the upcoming academic year with new policies of the State government coming into force, impacting a broad range of programmes, including engineering, pharmacy and management.
Firstly, with the government rolling out the Scheduled Castes categorisation reservation, the same will be implemented from the academic year 2025-26.
As per the recent GO MS 10, the 56 SC communities, which have a total of 15 per cent reservation, have been divided into three groups – Group – I, II and III with Group – II having a nine per cent reservation, while the Group – I and III have one and five per cent reservation respectively. The same reservation policy will be reflected in the admissions.
For instance, considering engineering convener quota seats this academic year, out of 87,184 seats 871 are meant for Group – I, 7,839 for Group – II and 4,355 seats are for Group – III category.
Telangana Council of Higher Education Chairman Prof V Balakista Reddy said reservations as per SC categorisation would be implemented in admissions to all professional programmes, including engineering, MBA, MCA, and Pharmacy, from this year.
Secondly, starting next academic year, five per cent of the seats in higher education institutions will be reserved for individuals with benchmark disabilities. Each category of disability — blindness and low vision, deaf and hard of hearing, locomotor disability, autism and intellectual disability, and multiple disabilities — will get a reservation of one per cent each. So far, only three percent of the seats were reserved for persons with benchmark disabilities.
Further, as the 10-year common admissions between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana as laid down in the AP Reorganisation Act 2014 ended this academic year, there will be no non-local admissions. As per an order issued by the Higher Education department, 85 per cent of the seats will be reserved for Telangana locals (Osmania University area).
The remaining 15 per cent of seats will come under unreserved and candidates declared as locals of OU area are eligible for unreserved category seats. Children of parents, who resided in the State for 10 years, government employees and university staff are also eligible for admissions under the unreserved category.
