Hyderabad: AGI glaspac, a part of Packaging Products Division (PPD) at HSIL Limited, is commissioning a new glass unit in Bhongir, Telangana, with an investment of Rs 400 crore, creating 700 direct jobs and 2,500 indirect jobs. This expansion will expand the total workforce in the company’s glass segment in Telangana to 3,700.
The company is also setting up a dedicated R&D centre in Hyderabad, which will carry out fundamental research on glass and help upgrading the products and the manufacturing facility. This centre will begin operations next month. AGI will also be setting up a new design centre.
Rrajesh K Khosla, president & CEO of AGI glaspac, told Telangana Today in an exclusive interview, “We currently have a manufacturing capacity of 1,600 metric tonnes per day (TPD). With the new facility, the capacity will touch 1,750 metric tonnes per day by the end of March. We have been growing consistently in Telangana with the support of the State government.”
He added, “With an aim to cater to the growing demand in specialty glass segment, AGI glaspac will be inaugurating its new manufacturing facility in Bhongir next week. The new 154 TPD glass plant will focus on clear glass products such as cosmetics and perfumery. Besides catering to the domestic market, we will also look at export opportunities through the new facility.”
Growth bound
AGI glaspac, established in 1972, has two state-of-the-art facilities, one in Hyderabad and the other in Bhongir, Telangana. The company’s glass segment currently has revenues at Rs 1,200 crore, which will go up to Rs 1,700-Rs 1,900 crore by 2023, with the new facility.
The company makes glass containers to meet the stringent quality standards and the packaging needs of food, pharmaceuticals, soft drinks, spirits, beer, wine, and other industries. He noted, “Food/processed food segment is growing very fast in India. Liquor is the second major segment followed by the pharmaceuticals industry.”
AGI caters to multinational companies as well as large Indian companies, across various sectors. Apart from the Indian market, the company’s products are shipped to North America, Europe, Africa as well as the APAC region.
The company offers a product range covering Flint, Amber and Green containers. The product range varies from a small 5 ml bottle used in pharmaceuticals to a 4,000-ml chemical / food jars. With the recent addition of Colouring Forehearth technology at the Bhongir plant, AGI provides glass containers in various colours that opens new branding avenues for end-user companies.
Khosla added, “Container glass is a very important packaging area globally and in India. Glass is today being recycled almost 100 per cent, and thus is a sustainable solution. Due to environment-friendly nature of glass and health aspects, the demand for glass is set to grow in future. In India, about 7,300 tonnes of glass is being produced daily.
