Warangal: Chief Justice of India NV Ramana on Sunday said the Centre was yet to respond to several issues facing the judiciary in the country, including the establishment of a Judicial Infrastructure Corporation and extending financial assistance to lawyers who lost their livelihood due to Covid pandemic.
Justice Ramana, who was speaking after inaugurating a court complex here, said though proposals for setting up the Judicial Infrastructure Corporation and mobile internet facilities in rural areas were sent in earlier this year, nothing had come of it. He was, however, still hopeful that the Union government will introduce a legislation in the ongoing winter session of Parliament to create the Judicial Infrastructure Corporation. “There has been no proper response from the Centre to my request for financial help to families of lawyers who lost their livelihood due to Covid,” he said.
Pointing out that the three main issues in the country were lack of basic infrastructure, increasing the number of judges and financial help to deserving lawyers, the CJI said: “Only when we overcome these problems can we reach out to the people and there would be some meaning to access to justice then.” he said.
Observing that many States in the country were shying away from allocating funds to build court complexes, Justice Ramana appreciated the Telangana government for sanctioning funds to build a complex here without waiting for the Central funds.
The CJI was all praise for the historic Warangal city and the region which produced great luminaries in the field of literature and politics, including former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao. “I have a very close relationship with the city of Warangal,” he said, adding that he had attended three literary programmes too in Warangal.
“I have relatives and friends here. Warangal is a centre of spirituality. It is a historic city. Warangal has been in the lead in the State in different spheres of politics, culture and economy. It is the centre of several progressive movements, and the birthplace of many ideologies,” he said.
“This region is home to arts, literature and culture. It is the home of many poets, freedom fighters and revolutionaries. It is the birthplace of famous litterateurs like Bammera Pothana, Palkuriki Somnathudu, Dasarathi brothers and Kaloji Narayana Rao. This is the region that gave a Prime Minister to the nation. It was the birthplace of many struggles against authoritarian and dictatorial policies,” he said. He mentioned the famous slogan ‘Naa Telangana Koti Ratnala Veena’ from a poem penned by noted poet Dasarathi Krishnamacharya against the tyrannical Nizam.
The CJI appealed to the people not to forget their mother tongue. “Speak in Telugu with your children. The mother tongue should be respected,” he added. His speech in Telugu in which he quoted Kaloji and Dasarathi received applauds from the audience who were ‘shocked’ to learn about his passion for Telugu literature.
Earlier, CJI NV Ramana visited the famous Thousand Pillar temple and Bhadrakali temple with his family members and judicial officials.
