Hyderabad: In a unique attempt at showcasing the possibility that even after a heart episode, people can lead an active life, cardiac patients, fitness enthusiasts, doctors and people from all walks of life participated in ‘Cardiac Rehab Run’ at Necklace Road on Sunday.
Organised by Apollo Hospitals, Hyderguda, in association with the Cardiac Rehab Foundation, the run aimed to raise awareness on preventing young and early heart attacks through screening and education and raising funds for free rehab services to underprivileged patients.
Doctors said that 90 per cent of heart attacks are preventable with awareness and structured rehab programmes. Despite being a WHO Class 1A recommended initiative, cardiac rehab remains underused in India.
Dr Rajeev Garg, senior cardiologist, Apollo Hospitals, said, “Rehabilitation is not just for post-surgery patients but also for those who want to prevent a cardiac episode”.
Regional CEO of Apollo Hospitals, Telangana, Tejesvi Rao Veerapalli, said the run also featured fitness demonstrations, awareness talks and stories from heart survivors.
Regional COO, Dr Rachapalli Reddyappa Reddy, said several heart patients who underwent rehab have now transformed their lives, even participating in marathons.
