Hyderabad: The BRS strongly opposed the State government’s move to divide the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) into three separate corporations, alleging that the decision was irrational and was taken unilaterally without public consultation. The party termed the Congress government’s decision to appoint special officers, as an attempt to avoid elections.
“If the government had any sincerity, it would have conducted GHMC elections along with the ongoing municipal polls. Under BRS rule, GHMC elections were held twice on time,” BRS whip and Quthbullahpur MLA KP Vivekananda said.
Speaking to mediapersons here on Wednesday, he termed the decision undemocratic and unscientific. The Congress government had extended the GHMC limits up to the Outer Ring Road and subsequently divided the expanded corporation into three separate corporations, without consulting stakeholders, elected representatives or the public.
“Even Congress leaders including the outgoing Mayor are unaware of this move. Decisions are being taken secretly and unilaterally,” he said.
The BRS MLA accused Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy of taking arbitrary decisions and running the administration through special officers. He pointed out that no scientific study or survey was conducted and no public opinion had been sought before proposing the division. “The merger of seven municipal corporations, 20 municipalities and certain villages within ORR limits in GHMC followed by subsequent division into three municipal corporations, is an attempt to centralise control,” he remarked.
He asserted that the BRS would oppose any division of GHMC that goes against public opinion. “We will raise this issue strongly in the Assembly and confront the government both inside and outside the House,” he said.
