Hyderabad: Protesting the Congress government’s decision to restrict the monsoon session to just two days, the BRS staged a walkout from the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) meeting held under the chairmanship of Speaker G Prasad Kumar in the Assembly on Saturday.

Pressing for a 15-day session to discuss key issues such as urea shortage, floods, viral fevers and student deaths in residential schools, BRS MLA T Harish Rao said the government had ignored their demand.

“Due to heavy rains, farmers suffered losses and deaths were reported. We wanted a discussion on these pressing issues in the Assembly but the government did not consider our demand,” Harish Rao said.

He alleged that farmers across the State were suffering due to urea shortage, while both the Congress and BJP were engaged in blame games, pushing the farming community into severe distress.

Citing reports of about 100 student deaths in residential schools, he said SC, ST, BC and Minority students were also suffering due to delays in fee reimbursement. Government employees too were facing hardships with pending bills and retirement benefits. “It appears the government wants to derive political mileage by presenting the Kaleshwaram Commission report. The BRS is ready to debate the project for four days, but the government wants to finish the session in just two,” he said.

The AIMIM also sought an extended session of at least 15 days. Floor Leader Akbaruddin Owaisi, in a representation to the Speaker, sought short discussions on 13 issues including flood damages, farmers’ suicides, urea shortage, welfare scheme implementation, the status of the Kaleshwaram project, Mission Kakatiya, the job calendar, and law and order.

Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Legislative Affairs Minister D Sridhar Babu, former Minister V Prashanth Reddy and BJP MLA Aleti Maheswar Reddy also attended the BAC meeting.
