Karimnagar: Amid suspensions, the BRS captured the Jammikunta Municipal Chairman post with 16 votes. Molugu Prasanth alias Dileep was elected as chairman and Mumthaj Ali Mohammed alias Javeed was elected as vice-chairman.
The BRS leader Prasanth contested as an independent candidate as he was denied a ticket by the party. His sister also won as an independent. There was intense suspense as no political party got a clear majority to capture the Jammikunta Municipal Chairman post. Out of 30 wards, the BRS won 12, the Congress 10, the BJP 4, the Independents 3 and the AIFB 1.
With an eye on the chairman post, Congress leaders allegedly tried to kidnap two BRS councillors immediately after the completion of the counting process on Friday. However, the BRS leaders foiled their attempts. Initially, Prasanth and two other councillors showed their inclination to join the Congress camp, but he decided to join the BRS on Monday morning and was elected as chairman.
Mild tension prevailed at the Jammikunta municipal council hall when the Congress councillors tried to prevent Prasanth from going to the BRS seats. Local MLA Padi Kaushik Reddy, who is an ex-officio member of the council, intervened and took Prasanth to the BRS seats. The BRS won the chairman post with 16 votes, including BRS 12, Independents 3 and Kaushik Reddy’s ex-officio vote. BJP and AIFB councillors stayed away from voting.
