Hyderabad: Demanding the Congress government withdraw the GO 33 and hold the NEET UG 2024 counselling for MBBS and BDS admissions in the State, the BRSV student leaders staged a protest at Ministers’ quarters here on Sunday.

The protestors led by BRSV president Gellu Srinivas Yadav tried to march towards Ministers’ quarters from Telangana Bhavan when they were detained by the police. Heated arguments and scuffle ensued between the police personnel and student leaders as the latter were detained. However, a few student leaders including BRSV state secretary Jangaiah reached the Ministers’ quarters and staged the protest.

Through the GO 33, the State government was depriving Telangana born students of their opportunity for medicine admission under convener quota as they studied in other States, the student leaders said. They wondered why the Congress government has been insisting on implementation of GO 33, which turns Telangana students as non-locals and prioritizes students of other States and demanded the government immediate withdrawal of the GO 33.

With an aim to offer medical education to economically weaker students in the State, former Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao had established a medical college in each district. However, Chief Minister A.Revanth Reddy‘s government was now keeping medical education away from the poor students, they alleged.

While the previous BRS government increased MBBS seats to 8,915 and transformed the medical education, the present government was working towards sidelining these initiatives, they alleged.

The activists lamented that due to lackadaisical approach of the State government the private medical colleges were seeking deemed university status, resulting in loss of 50 per cent quota convener seats for students in the State.
