Hyderabad: Today’s cameras can produce a technically correct picture. But still it is the people behind the camera that bring the love, tenderness, innocence, unbridled energy, vibrancy and other emotive things to the fore. Make time to visit the State Art Gallery, where a photo exhibition titled `Peristence’ is on till March 18.
The exhibition, inaugurated to coincide with the International Women’s Day Tuesday, has on display 19 pictures on varied themes, clicked by 19 women photographers from across the country. They cover newborns, maternity, festival, street, childhood, parenthood and more. Not all frames are candid. Some of them are posed to align with the theme and there is also a liberal but controlled use of flash details. Subha Krishnan, Hyderabad-based photographer working with newborns, has a picture titled ‘Safe in mom’s hands’.
This shows a mother cupping the feet of the new member and the infant’s arms come on the feet. “New borns stay curled up, like they are in the womb,” she says about the photo clicked on a black background with external lighting. The footnote on the exhibits tells why the photographs are special to their makers. One photo is titled ‘Daddy’s Princess’, clicked by Soumya Pandya of Mumbai, and rightly shows a proud looking father adoring his daughter.
Then there is one ‘Dangerous Look’ of an ageing man with a flowing beard and blood red eyes clicked by Pooja Yadav of Jaipur.
“When I was taking his picture he was in meditation..and suddenly he opened his eyes,” says the note. There are also a couple of pictures portraying pregnancy – one showcasing the power to create new beings and one about the choices one has to make. “We must bring out the colour and bring value to this world,” says Kranti Remala from Hyderabad. She has a picture of holi celebrations, with hues in focus. Deepali Sharma Agarwal, also from Hyderabad, shows a mother and her son striking a deal at a shop at the busy Charminar. “I used a slow shutter to talk about the busy street,” she says.
