Chain snatchers make merry in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: There was a spree of chain snatchings, including one futile attempt as well, in and around the city on Wednesday.
Three of these incidents were in the Cyberabad Police limits. According to the police, snatchers struck at two places in Petbasheerabad and snatched gold chains from women. At Raghavendra Nagar, they targeted a woman Anuradha, who was purchasing vegetables at a roadside pushcart. When she resisted, she was dragged for some distance by the assailants after which she fell on the road. The snatchers managed to pull off one of the two gold chains she was wearing.
Minutes later, snatchers struck at a nearby colony and snatched a gold chain weighing around four tolas from another woman, Varalakshmi, who was walking on the road.
Chain snatchers also made a futile attempt to snatch a gold chain from a woman, Umarani, at Bhagyalaxmi Colony. However, she managed to raise an alarm forcing the man to flee the spot.
The police suspect either the same person or members of one gang might be behind all these incidents.
In the Hyderabad Police limits, unidentified persons snatched gold chains from two women. In the first case, a scooter-borne snatcher flicked a gold chain weighing two tolas from a woman at Suman Gardens road in Tukaramgate around 1 pm. The woman, aged around 60 years, was walking on the road when the offender came from behind and snatched the gold chain before escaping.
In the nearby Marredpally police station limits, the snatcher fled with a gold chain weighing around five tolas from a woman in the afternoon.
The police are verifying footage from CCTV cameras to nab the offenders. Teams of the local police assisted by the Commissioner’s Task Force are on the job.
