Hyderabad: OpenAI has unveiled a new “agent mode” for ChatGPT, enabling the AI chatbot to not just think and respond, but also act—using its own virtual computer to complete tasks from start to finish with minimal user intervention.
The feature, which is being rolled out to Pro, Plus, and Team users, allows ChatGPT to perform complex workflows such as browsing websites, filtering content, running code, conducting research, and generating presentations or spreadsheets, all within a single conversation.
Users can now ask ChatGPT to execute tasks such as: “Look at my calendar and brief me on upcoming client meetings based on recent news,” or “Plan and buy ingredients to make Japanese breakfast for four,” or even “Analyze three competitors and create a slide deck.” ChatGPT will then navigate the web, prompt for secure logins if needed, and deliver actionable results—including editable documents.
This capability is powered by a unified agentic system that combines the core strengths of two earlier tools—Operator and Deep Research. While Operator enabled website interaction (scrolling, clicking, logging in), Deep Research specialized in analyzing and summarizing content. The integration of both functionalities, along with new tools, now enables seamless transitions from conversations to complex task execution.
Importantly, OpenAI emphasized that users remain in control at all times. ChatGPT will request permission before performing consequential actions, and users can pause, intervene, or stop any task at any point.
The new agent mode represents a significant evolution in AI usability and productivity. OpenAI has stated that this is just the beginning, with plans to continue refining and expanding the tool’s capabilities in the coming months.
