Yadadri-Bhongir: The Department of Peadiatrics at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bibinagar, on Monday organised a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on the occasion of World Sickle Cell Day on June 21.
In his Inaugural address, Executive Director of AIIMS Dr Vikas Bhatia said that sickle cell disease, a genetic disorder and a common cause of anaemia with life-threatening complications, was a public health problem in central India, affecting around 10 per cent of the population.
Multidisciplinary faculty from AIIMS deliberated on various aspects of the disease including its burden, manifestations, diagnosis, treatment, and complications. He stressed the need for more work in this area to benefit the people of Telangana.
A world renowned expert on sickle cell disease, Dr. Graham Serjeant, who is the Chairman of the Sickle Cell Trust in Jamaica, West Indies, shared his lifetime work and experiences in an online session.
Experts from Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Raipur, Surat, and Vellore participated in the online panel discussion on regional differences in the disease spectrum, importance of newborn screening and relevant government initiatives and programmes.
