Hyderabad: Being a student in India is tough. Apart from the vast syllabus that they need to cover each year, every child has to deal with the weight of expectations of scoring well in examinations. While some students are able to score well, there are many who need extra support. To help such kids understand the basic concepts of various subjects, Hyderabad’s NS Ranjan started Concept Kendra in 2018.
“While I was in school, students were segregated in various sections of the class based on their marks. So the brightest kids were in section A, average in section B and C, and those who really needed help were in section D. However, what I found unfair was, the students of section A got the best teachers, while the teachers of section D, which needed support to even pass, weren’t that good. Basically, all schools/junior colleges are just training their best students so that some, or at least one, can crack the IIT-JEE and no one is teaching to actually impart knowledge to the next generation,” says Ranjan.
The Concept Kendra start-up engages kids studying between classes II and X, and teaches them Maths and Science only.
After completing engineering from BITS, Mesra, Jharkhand, 25-year-old Ranjan worked for a private company and at the same time helped some kids with their studies, and that inspired him to initiate the start-up.
“Many parents shared how their kid wasn’t that good in studies and got less marks. When I started teaching, I noticed that each kid has their own strength and their own learning curve. The way one teaches affects how much the kid can grasp as well. In a class where there are 30 kids, it is possible that some of the kids don’t understand the basic mathematical or scientific concept,” says Ranjan, adding, “So I started teaching kids in a way they understood. And that had positive results as well. One of the students I taught, who hardly got the passing marks, scored 94 per cent in his final exams.” And that’s what started the journey of Concept Kendra.
Interestingly, several Indian students studying abroad are also enrolled with Concept Kendra. “I didn’t have an investor, so we didn’t do any marketing of our product. However, it was word-of-mouth that helped us. Today, we have around 30-40 Indian kids, whose parents are settled abroad.”
Armed with 15 teachers, Concept Kendra also focuses on customised teaching. “Each class consists of maximum six students that helps to focus on each kid. Also, we try to customise our way of teaching to suit the child’s understanding. We are also very strict about teaching from the books that are used in the student’s school, so that they don’t get confused between two teaching methods.”
Focused solely on a child’s development and not their marks, Concept Kendra is helping several kids towards a brighter future. “I never understood why they displayed our marks on the notice board. We at Concept Kendra only share the marks with parents, so that the kid can study in a stress-free environment,” he concludes.
