Hyderabad: Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president N. Uttam Kumar Reddy on Tuesday slammed the Central government for failing to control increasing petrol and diesel prices despite dip in crude oil rates in the international market.
Responding to a call for nationwide protests given by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) to express solidarity with farmers protesting against the farm laws in New Delhi, TPCC leaders attempted to lay siege to Raj Bhavan in the city.
Police, however, took them into preventive custody near the State Secretariat while they were proceeding towards Raj Bhavan.
Speaking on the occasion, Uttam Kumar Reddy demanded that the Centre immediately roll back fuel prices. He said all sections of people were facing hardships because of rising fuel prices.
Referring to the farm laws, he criticized the Central government for failing to meet the demands of the agitating farmers. “When the Centre claims that it is pro-farmers, why it was not coming to their rescue and conceding their demands?” he asked.
Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, who also took part in the protest, requested the Centre to roll back fuel prices and repeal the farm laws.
Another senior Congress MLA T. Jayaprakash Reddy said the party would not stop organising protests in support of farmers even if the police tried to book cases against them.
