Visakhapatnam: Former Energy Secretary EAS Sarma has appealed to the government to intervene urgently and ensure that the government hospitals admit patients in critical condition, irrespective of whether they have test certificates or not.

In a letter addressed to Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy here on Wednesday, he felt that instead of leaving Covid-19 patients to their fate, as the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC) is doing, the health officials should reach out to the patients, get them tested if necessary and get them admitted to hospitals.

“As expected, the number of new Covid cases has gone up, crossing a figure of 20,000 per day. Partly, this increase is man-made as the APPCB officers are convening ‘public hearings’ for projects in violation of the Covid norms and in some districts, religious congregations have been allowed. The recent bypoll could also be a superspreader of the virus,” he felt.

There also appeared to be an acute shortage of hospital beds and oxygen shortages while many Covid essential drugs had disappeared from the market, he noted.

“Most importantly, there is a scramble for RT PCR tests. One can see long queues for it. While private clinics are conducting Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs), they do not give certificates in the absence of which government hospitals are not willing to admit patients in critical condition. I am aware of a case of a patient in urgent need of oxygen but he is unable to get admission to any government hospital because he cannot produce a piece of paper to show that he has tested positive. He cannot stand in long lines for RT PCR testing because he is gasping for breath.

While the State may have adequate oxygen, those seeking to buy oxygen cylinders from the market are unable to get the same,”Dr. Sarma pointed out, hoping that the State government woke up to the reality on the ground and act urgently.”
