Hyderabad: A part-time job or an opportunity to make some quick money during these pandemic times is what cyber fraudsters are dangling before unemployed youth these days, before cheating them.
With several youngsters falling prey to such tricks, the Cyberabad Police have issued an advisory asking the youth not to fall victims to job frauds, pointing out that several cases of cheating on the pretext of job opportunities, mostly in e-commerce companies, were being reported.
In the latest case, a man was duped of Rs 1.02 lakh by fraudsters. The victim received a text message from a bulk messaging ID ‘VK-SECRRE’ saying “HI (Xyz Victim) ABCD (a prominent ecommerce firm) urgently recruiting for part time jobs and you can earn Rs 3,000-10,000 every day, add whatsapp:wa.me/918125323349mj.”
“The victim clicked the link and contacted the WhatsApp number and the fraudster sent another link, on which also the victim clicked. The victim was directed to another web page where he was asked to invest money on a commission basis on the advice of the fraudster. For initial investments, the victim got commissions and got convinced, after which he invested Rs 1,02,000 and got cheated,” Cyberabad cybercrime officials said.
Fraudsters nowadays were targeting unemployed youth and luring them in the name of offering part time jobs and contacting through bulk SMS services. After luring them, the fraudsters contact the victim on WhatsApp and send them links of investment websites. On clicking the links, they are directed to investment platforms or e-commerce platforms and asked to invest or perform a few tasks such as purchasing a few items and assured high commissions. Believing the fraudsters, the victims invest money or purchase items and get duped, the officials added.
The police issued an advisory asking people to be careful about fake online investment/trading sites and not to respond to bulk SMS/ WhatsApp messages received promising job offers, trading/investment tips etc…
It appealed to people not to respond to or click phishing links sent through messages and advised them not to download any apps nor deposit amounts or purchase any item without verifying the company. Any cybercrime offence should be reported in the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal or dial 155260 toll free number, the police appealed.
