Deepavali, meaning a row of lamps (Deepas or Diyas), is often celebrated globally with dazzling lights, delightful sweets, and spectacular fireworks. However, the festival’s true spiritual significance transcends these external displays, serving as an annual reminder of profound internal and moral truths.
The Eternal Victory of Light
The celebration fundamentally marks two major historical events. Firstly, it commemorates the return of Lord Rāmacandra to Ayodhyā after defeating the demon king Rāvaṇa and ascending the throne. This event, continuing for lakhs of years due to Guru-Shishya parampara (tradition), symbolises the victory of dharma (goodness) over adharma (evil). Spiritually, this mirrors the essential Vedic teaching, ‘Tamaso mā jyotir gamaya’, guiding us to move from the darkness of ignorance toward the light of knowledge.
Finding Serenity in Spiritual Connection
In a competitive and stressed modern world, Deepawali offers a vital opportunity to reconnect with inner peace and inherent values. By celebrating with a proper understanding of the pastimes (leelas) of the Lord, one reaps immense spiritual benefits and develops attachment to divine connection.
Inner purification and gratitude are achieved through devotional acts, such as offering a ghee lamp to Yashoda Damodara and distributing Prasadam (sweets offered to the Lord) to family, relatives, and neighbours, an act very pleasing to Lord Krishna.
The Enduring Message of Rāma Rājya
Lord Rāma’s return inaugurated Rāma Rājya, an era where bodily and mental suffering, disease, distress, fear, and fatigue were completely absent. The message for modern society and today’s youth is clear: adherence to dharma leads to an ideal, successful life. Lord Rāma was exemplary in his conduct, demonstrating high standards as a son, brother, husband, and ruler.
Deepawali is an ideal time for families and schools to instill these dharmic values. The moral value most relevant to today’s generation is overcoming the six internal “Rāvaṇas”—lust, anger, greed, envy, illusion, and madness. The vedic scriptures suggest that chanting the Hare Krishna Mahamantra is the means prescribed for this liberation in the present age.
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
Youth can draw inspiration from the ultimate spiritual principle that following the instructions of the Lord, such as those found in the Bhagavad Gita, inevitably leads to wealth, victory, extraordinary power, and morality. By focusing on the inner essence of this festival—devotional service and spiritual knowledge—we make Deepawali an occasion for lasting inner transformation.
