UNESCO on Wednesday inscribed Deepavali on its Intangible Cultural Heritage list, marking a global recognition of one of India’s most celebrated festivals. The announcement came during the ongoing 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee at Delhi’s Red Fort, the first hosted by India.

Deepavali was celebrated with traditional fervour across Telangana, as residents adorned homes and temples, and shopped at festive stalls. Governor Jishnu Dev Varma and Chief Minister Revanth Reddy extended greetings, with appeals to support local products and practise safety while bursting crackers.

This Deepavali reflection by His Grace Satya Gaura Chandra Dasa Prabhuji emphasises the festival’s deeper spiritual essence—celebrating the victory of dharma over adharma, reconnecting with divine values, and overcoming inner vices. Through devotional acts and Vedic wisdom, the festival becomes a pathway to inner transformation and lasting peace.

Ahead of Deepavali, Khammam police have approved 128 firecracker shops through a draw of lots, with strict instructions on safety and legal compliance. Additional DCP Prasad Rao warned of legal action against unauthorised storage or sale of fireworks and urged the public to report violations.

A few videos of the bikers performing stunts went viral on social media platforms following which the police swung into action and booked cases.

Dīpāvalī festival is also observed as the New Year Day of the Hindu Calendar.
