Hyderabad: With an increasing number of companies coming up and existing ones focusing on good governance, the demand for Company Secretaries, who ensure rules are followed besides advising the Board of Directors and the company, has gone up. However, the field is faced with scarcity of trained professionals.
The Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI), Hyderabad Chapter, Chairman, Dr. Raja Mogili Amirisetty gives an insight into Company Secretaries (CS) as a lucrative career option for students, CS Executive Entrance Test (CSEET), ICSI membership and more in an interaction with Yuvraj Akula.
On Role of Company Secretaries:
A Company Secretary is a key managerial person in a company and there are a lot of opportunities in this profession including as a compliance officer, governance professional, board adviser, corporate risk manager, corporate planner and strategic manager. Apart from employment, a CS can also practice as a secretarial auditor. There is a lot of demand for the CS but supply is less.
A CS can be appointed or can practice if he/she is a member of the ICSI, which is a statutory body established under an Act of Parliament. On passing the CS examination and completing the training, the ICSI will grant associate CS membership to qualified candidates.
On how to become a CS:
Students have to qualify the CS Executive Entrance Test (CSEET) to enroll for the CS Executive programme. Intermediate or 10 2 qualified students are eligible for the entrance test which is conducted four times a year. Forthcoming entrance test will be held on May 7 in 200 centres across the country. Business communication, legal aptitude and logical reasoning, economic and business environment and current affairs subjects are covered in the test.
Any graduate with above 50 per cent of marks can join Executive programme without an entrance test and those who have less than 50 per cent of marks in degree or pursuing a degree course should qualify in the entrance test. Similarly, students who completed a PG course can directly join the programme. Those who qualified in the CS Executive programme are eligible for the CS Professional programme.
On Distance Learning:
Both courses are offered as theory subjects in distance learning mode. The UGC recognizes the CS qualification equivalent to a PG degree. We have three study centres in Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Khammam districts.
On Training to be CS:
Students have to undergo one month EDP and 21 months practical training after passing the executive programme examination. After the professional programme, students should undergo a corporate leadership development programme in order to get membership of the ICSI. During the training, a stipend of over Rs.10,000 per month is granted.
On Placements for CS:
Every listed company and every public and private company having a paid up share capital of Rs.10 crore must appoint a CS and placements are provided to students. After getting the ICSI membership, the initial salary is not less than Rs.40,000 per month and there is a lot of growth in the profession. The CS also have job opportunities in foreign countries.
On ICSI, Hyderabad Chapter Awareness programmes:
We will be creating awareness among parents and students about CS as a profession and churn out more qualified CS. There are plans to sign with Satavahana University to conduct awareness activities in colleges.
The last date to register for CSEET is April 15. For more details, visit the office of ICSI-Hyderabad Chapter, Uppal, Hyderabad or contact on 040-27177721/24/28 or visit the website https://www.icsi.edu/hyderabad/home/.
