Hanamkonda: The demand to create Warangal district by uniting Warangal and Hanamkonda districts has been gaining momentum with Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy’s reported decision to either reduce the number of districts or redraw their boundaries.
The Telangana Udyamakarula Vedika and Forum for Better Warangal have been championing the cause with an argument that creating a single Warangal district with all the mandals of Warangal and Hanamkonda districts would be helpful for its development besides ensuring better administration.
Speaking to Telangana Today, Vedika chairman Kurapati Venkata Narayana stated that Warangal-Hanamkonda-Kazipet have been known as tri-cities for decades, with the creation of Warangal and Hanamkonda as two separate districts took away that identity.
He reminded that after the formation of Telangana State, erstwhile Warangal district was divided into five districts namely Warangal Urban, Warangal Rural, Mahabubabad, Bhupalpally and Jangaon in October, 2016.
Until August, 2021, the entire tri-cities, which as part of Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation, came under Warangal Urban district and it was changed to Hanamkonda district by dividing the tri-cities into two parts. Warangal district was created with Warangal city as well as some parts of Hanamkonda and it hampered the development of tri-cities badly, Narayana alleged.
Based on scientific, historical and economic reasons, there is a need to unite Warangal, a business hub and Hanamkonda, an educational hub. The Vedika would intensify its efforts for the creation of Warangal district by mobilising support of intellectuals, political parties and the residents, he said.
If the tri-cities, which are home to several historical monuments, several government and private educational institutions, as well as regional offices, are in the same district it would develop educationally and commercially besides emerging as a major city after Hyderabad, said former Mayor T Rajeswara Rao.
Meanwhile, ‘PV Zilla Sadhana Samithi’ is demanding the State government to create a PV district to honour former Prime Minister, the late PV Narasimha Rao with Huzurabad as its headquarters. The samithi leaders want Vangara, PV’s hometown, which is part of Hanamkonda district, to be included in PV district.
The reason behind the demand to make Huzurabad as the PV district headquarters is that the town is close to PV’s hometown of Vangara, which was previously in Karimnagar district.
