FAQ Q1. Do U.S. universities accept three-year degree programs for master’s admissions?
– B Mohan Krishna
U.S. universities generally require students (international or domestic students) to have completed four years of undergraduate education (bachelor’s degree) to be considered eligible for admission to a graduate (master’s degree) program. Some universities clearly state that they do not accept three-year bachelor’s degree. Other universities may consider three-year degrees if a student’s credentials are evaluated by an evaluation service specified by the university. Students will then need to send their transcripts to the required credential evaluation organization and provide a course-by-course evaluation. The evaluation agency will then send their evaluation report to the university for the university’s consideration of admission.
U.S. universities are generally open and approachable to discussing specific requests, so we suggest students take the time to connect with an admissions officer with questions like this one.
If a student is currently pursuing a three-year bachelor’s degree program, we recommend that you shortlist a few universities and reference their graduate admissions page to see if they accept three-year undergraduate degrees. If yes, then the student can proceed with their other application requirements. We also recommend that students reach out to the admissions offices of these universities to confirm they still accept three-year degrees.

Q2. How can I check if the university is recognized in the United States?
– Anand Surya
“Accreditation” is a common term used in the United States to refer to the voluntary process by which institutions or programs demonstrate that they meet and maintain certain educational standards. The United States does not have a central government office that approves educational institutions. Instead it relies on a system of voluntary accreditation carried out by non-governmental accrediting bodies or accrediting associations which determine and regulate educational standards. Accreditation is a process that validates the integrity of an educational institution. For the student, it is an indication that the institution or program meets certain standards of excellence. If the institute you attend is not accredited, your degree may not be recognized by employers, other universities, governments of other countries, or your home country’s department of education.
Students may find out if a course or university is accredited by visiting the database of accredited programs and institutions published by the U.S. Department of Education at https://ope.ed.gov/dapip/#/home or Department of Homeland Security at https://studyinthestates.dhs.gov/school-search. However, students should evaluate all aspects of a school’s offerings before making a decision to enroll.
Q3. Is the GMAT a requirement to apply for an MBA from a U.S. university?
– Sandeep Reddy
The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a standardized assessment designed to predict how applicants for MBA programs and other business-related graduate degrees will perform academically. The scores from standardized tests are used by admissions officials of universities to predict your academic performance in a graduate program and make admission decisions. You should check the websites of chosen universities to determine if the GMAT is required as part of the application for the MBA program at the institution and accordingly prepare and register for the test. Increasingly, many business schools also accept the Graduate Records Examinations (GRE) standardized test.
Each graduate business school develops and implements its own policy concerning the use of GMAT scores in making admissions decisions. Many schools select students by combining GMAT scores and undergraduate GPA. Moreover, admissions officials may consider subjective factors such as work and other relevant experience, recommendation letters, application essays (personal statements), and reports of personal interviewers.
Q4. What are the start dates for bachelor programs at U.S. universities?
– Dileep Kumar
Academic intakes for undergraduate (bachelor’s) programs in the United States vary by university. Fall and spring semesters are the two major academic intake periods. Fall semester starts in mid-August to September, at the beginning of the academic year, while the spring semester starts in January, in the middle of the academic year. A few universities only offer a fall semester intake while others offer both fall and spring semester intakes. It is important that students check the university website for admission periods offered and respective application deadlines before they start working on their applications.
