Adilabad: The race for the post of District Congress Committee (DCC) president has intensified across Adilabad, Nirmal, Kumram Bheem Asifabad and Mancherial districts, with several aspirants filing applications, indicating tough competition ahead.
According to Congress leaders, as many as 29 applications were received for the Mancherial DCC chief’s post, while Adilabad saw 23. Similarly, 24 aspirants applied for the Kumram Bheem Asifabad DCC president’s post and 16 for Nirmal. The unusually high number of contenders has reportedly caused concern within the party.
A majority of the applicants joined the Congress only a few years ago, though some already hold organisational posts. For instance, Athram Suguna, who joined the party just before the 2023 Assembly elections, is among the applicants. Khanapur MLA Vedma and former Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary Naresh Jadhav are also in the fray for the Adilabad DCC president’s post.
Party sources said at least five years of association with the Congress is mandatory to be considered for the DCC president’s role. Senior leaders with long-standing ties to the party have refrained from applying, citing internal disputes and financial constraints in managing routine party activities. Senior leader K Vishwaprasad, for example, chose not to apply.
All applications have been forwarded to the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in New Delhi. The final selection is expected within a week or two, based on loyalty and contribution to the party’s growth during elections. Several aspirants are said to be lobbying intensively, using their contacts and influence within the organisation.
Meanwhile, aspirants from backward communities have pinned their hopes on the posts, with the party recently pushing for 42 percent reservation for BCs. ST applicants are also confident that one of the posts will go to a tribal leader, given their sizeable presence in Adilabad district. Aspirants from upper castes too are making strong efforts to secure the position.
