Hyderabad: Pulmonologists at Kamineni Hospital, LB Nagar gave a fresh lease of life to a 31-year-old employee of DRDO, Gautam Kumar Shaw, who was admitted to the hospital with complaints of coughing up blood.
Shaw, a resident of West Bengal, was on Independence Day security arrangements duty at Red Fort, New Delhi, when the Prime Minister was addressing the nation. During that time, he had sudden bout of coughing blood and was rushed to a hospital in New Delhi but did not recover from the symptoms. He then decided to consult Dr E Ravindra Reddy and took a flight to Hyderabad.
Evaluation revealed that the patient had a history of chest wall tuberculosis but had recovered after proper treatment and about a year ago, had also tested positive for Covid. The doctors conducted a series of tests but could not pinpoint the exact nature of the ailment, even as Shaw continued to cough blood.
In view of Shaw being a high-profile patient, requests came in from various DRDO scientists to shift him to other hospitals for further assessment and treatment. However, Dr E Ravindra Reddy, made the diagnosis of Endobronchial tuberculosis, a rare form of pulmonary tuberculosis and the patient was started on anti-tubercular therapy.
“Subsequently, Shaw stopped coughing blood. His appetite improved and he started putting on weight. The patient is now on follow-up and doing well,” Dr Ravindra Reddy said.
