Hyderabad: Drones and artificial intelligence (AI) technology will aid the police department for crowd management during historic biennial Sammakka Saralamma jatara at Medaram in SS Tadwai mandal in Mulugu district from February 16.
The same AI technology helped the police in conducting jatara without any incident in 2020. Over 1.6 crore devotees visited Medaram last time.
Since devotees have darshan at ‘Gadde’, the holy place of Godesses Sammakka and Saralamma, and later submit their offerings, the crowd management and maintenance at this area is a huge task for the police to ensure proper order. To meet the challenges, the police are using AI technology.
An IT team from Hyderabad has already started its operations to assist the Mulugu district police in extensively using AI technology linked to surveillance cameras installed at Sammakka Saralamma temple and Jampanna Vagu in Medaram and its surroundings.
These cameras will help the police for crowd management and ensure a hassle-free darshan and proper regulation of hundreds of vehicles that are arriving from different parts of the State apart from Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.
As many as 380 high-resolution cameras were installed at Medaram and these cameras were linked to the command and control centre near the temple.
The cameras that were connected to AI technology will generate alerts about surging crowd and forward them to the police officials at the command and control centre, who will instruct the field-level police personnel to manage the crowd properly.
The cameras will also give alerts on the number of vehicles arriving at Medaram so that the traffic police can take necessary steps to prevent chaos on the main road connecting the temple. At the same time, the police can guide vehicle owners to proceed to their designated parking lots.
“A team from Hyderabad arrived at Medaram to assist us in using the AI technology. Installation of surveillance cameras was also completed,” Tadwai Sub-Inspector Ch Venkateswara Rao said. The police department is deploying over 10,000 police personnel for the smooth conduct of jatara and using drone cameras to monitor the crowd movement near the temple.
• Over two lakh devotees are presently arriving at Medaram on Sundays
• About 80,000 devotees are arriving during normal days
