Despite being endowed with copious resources, talent and ideas, India comes across as a nation that has failed to perform to its full potential; a country where the dreams and aspirations of millions of people remain unfulfilled and the possibilities remain unexplored. There is a growing perception, particularly among the youth, that India needs a fresh approach, a new voice and a new policy direction that can help bring about transformational changes. It is against this mood of general despondency and a sense of under-achievement as a nation that the call for a new ideological battle, given by Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, assumes significance. His call for rewriting the country’s Constitution to reflect the new realities and overhauling the policy architecture to harness the full potential of the people is now finding traction at the national level. As an architect of the Telangana statehood movement and as someone who has transformed the new State as a role model for development, Rao is well-positioned to lead the political movement at the national level and become a catalyst for India’s renaissance. As Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut has put it, Rao has the ability to lead, taking all the like-minded parties together to bring about the much-needed transformation. There is a greater need today to replace the status quo politics, pursued for decades by the two so-called national parties, the Congress and the BJP, with the politics of genuine development in the spirit of federalism.
There is a new sense of hope and optimism in the country with the TRS chief setting the ball rolling by reaching out to the leaders of the like-minded parties to build an alternative front. These efforts are bound to gather momentum in the days ahead. The regional parties, which represent the local aspirations, must come together with other like-minded parties to forge an alternative front that will mark the celebration of true federal spirit. The people are now looking for a qualitative change in politics that ensures social justice and faster growth. The new national alliance must be based on a clear-cut alternative socio-economic agenda to put the country on a higher growth trajectory. One often wonders why India’s pace of development has been excruciatingly slow while others in the region like China are miles ahead. It’s a sad commentary on the status quo brand of politics adopted by the national parties over decades. Barring the nomenclature of the schemes, one hardly finds any difference in terms of quality of governance between the Congress and the BJP who have dominated the national scene all these years. The key failures have been their lack of long-term vision and political will to push for out-of-the-box ideas to put the country on a high growth trajectory. Time has come to explore a new brand of alternative politics focused on ensuring high growth.
