Hyderabad: Expressing concerns over the Telangana Congress government allocating only 8.2 per cent of the total budget to the Education sector, Telangana Save Education Committee demanded that the government enhance the allocations to at least 15 per cent.
In a statement on Sunday, the Committee reminded that the Congress government had ignored its own manifesto promise of allocating 15 per cent of the budget to the education sector on par with other States.
The government claimed that it would expand pre-primary education to 2,500 schools, but did not allocate even a single rupee in the budget, raising questions about the government’s sincerity, it said.
As for higher education, the committee said instead of allocating at least Rs 500 crore for development of each university, the government allocated small amounts.
“The Telangana Save Education Committee demands that the priorities of the education sector be discussed and understood in the assembly and that allocation for this sector be increased to at least 15 per cent,” said K Lamixnarayana, organising secretary, Telangana Save Education Committee.
