Hyderabad: A staggering 78 percent of government schools in the State have admissions less than 100, pointing to a crisis in the public education system.
This alarming data from the Education department comes in contrast to claims of Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, who also holds the Education department portfolio, that enrollments have gone up since the people’s government came into power.
As per the information recently released by the department, a whopping 17,639 (78 percent) out of 22,522 government elementary and secondary schools have admissions between 31 and 100 only.
Among the total, 15,770 were elementary schools, reflecting parents’ preferences when it comes to their child’s elementary education. The data brought to the fore that 35 percent out of 22,522 schools have admissions from 1 to 30.
Participating in the recent Teachers’ Day celebrations, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy claimed that after the people’s government assumed power, the enrolment in schools increased by three lakh. At present, 24 lakh students were studying in 27,000 government schools, he said.
Further, the data reveals that 3,722 elementary and secondary schools have a student strength between 101 and 250, while another 1,106 schools have admissions between 251 and 1,000. Out of 22,522 schools, only five schools reported having a strength above 1,000.
Meanwhile, the department has released Rs.29.74 crore as the composite school grant to the School Management Committees or Amma Adarsha Patashalas.
This amount, released under the Samagra Shiksha, Telangana, is for the government and local body schools, KGBVs, Model Schools, Tribal Welfare Schools, Sports Schools and other State government schools for the academic year 2025-26.
However, the grants have not been released for the zero enrolment and PM Shri schools. The major component of the grant will be put to use for quality improvement in the schools.
